You already knew the Land Rover Defender is a highly capable off-roader. To prove just how capable it can be, Land Rover entered three race-prepped Defenders, dubbed D7X-R, in this year’s Dakar rally in the Stock class, coming away with first-, second-, and fourth-place finishes. But since motorsports glory can be fleeting, what better way to capitalize on it than to bring the race winner to showrooms? That’s the impetus behind the Defender Dakar.
This concept takes inspiration from the D7X-R, which is itself based on the Defender Octa. Motivation comes from the Octa’s 626-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8, which also makes 553 pound-feet of torque. The Dakar sits on a modified suspension and widened front and rear tracks. Twenty-inch wheels are wrapped with 35-inch tires. The model features additional drive modes: Dunes, Gravel, and Flight—yes, the latter is for jumps.

The body has raised air intakes, the hood is carbon fiber, and the roof integrates front light pods. Beefed-up underbody protection is also included. The Dakar seats only four, with two racing seats up front, which can be fitted with four-point racing harnesses. Out back, there’s storage specifically designed for racing helmets, as well as a spare-tire mount and air compressor.
The concept’s Dakar Sand and Yanbu Turquoise color combo will be among the choices when the order books open next year for the limited production run. Land Rover promises more details in January at—where else?—the 2027 Dakar Rally.
