Overview

Mitsubishi’s new electric SUV is called the Eclipse Sportback and is based on the Nissan Leaf electric crossover. The Eclipse Sportback is not Mitsubishi's first EV offering—remember the weird little i-MiEV?—but it will be its most competitive one to date. It provides a driving range of around 282 miles per charge and comes with a single-motor powertrain that provides front-wheel drive.

The Nissan's styling up front has been revised into a unique look for the Mitsubishi, but you can still see some Leaf in the SUV's side profile and rear end. The Mitsubishi also shares the Leaf’s smooth ride and easygoing demeanor, but the single-motor powertrain lacks the punch we love in more powerful EVs.

Expert Tip: Mitsubishi also makes a gas-powered SUV called the Eclipse Cross and it's important not to confuse them as they're two quite different products.

What's New for 2027?

The Eclipse Sportback is an all-new vehicle for the Mitsubishi lineup, and it will go on sale in late 2026 as a 2027 model.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

- EV Motor: 214-hp single motor

- Drivetrain: front-wheel drive

The Eclipse Sportback has the same powertrain as the Leaf, a single electric motor powering the front wheels that produces 214 horsepower. There’s no all-wheel-drive option. When we drove a prototype of the Eclipse Sportback, we found it to offer an impressively comfortable and quiet ride. Acceleration isn’t as quick as in some other EVs, but the Eclipse Sportback can easily keep up with traffic.

0–60-MPH Times

- C/D 60-mph Estimate: 6.9 seconds

In Comparison: The mechanically identical Nissan Leaf got to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds in our testing, and we expect the Eclipse Sportback to deliver similar performance.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

- Claimed EV Range: 282 miles

The Eclipse Sportback comes with the same 75-kWh battery pack as the Leaf, but due to its trim differences its range estimate falls in the middle of the Leaf’s three trim levels’ estimated range. It a NACS (Tesla) charging port for fast-charging, and a J-1772 charging port for AC charging. Mitsubishi says plugging in via the NACS port can get the Eclipse Sportback from a 10 percent to an 80 percent charge in 35 minutes. There’s also a NACS to CCS adapter included.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Cover up the Mitsubishi logos, and you’d be convinced you’re sitting in the Nissan Leaf. The two cars’ interiors are practically identical, and the Mitsubishi uses the same diamond-pattern upholstery as the Leaf’s upper trim levels, and the same gear-selector buttons that take some getting used to.

Second Row: The rear seat is comfortable for two adults, but three is a squeeze. Heated rear seats are standard equipment, which is a nice touch.

Cargo Capacity: The sloping roofline limits cargo space somewhat, but Mitsubishi claims the Eclipse Sportback holds up to 56 cubic feet of stuff. When we tested the Nissan Leaf, it held 6 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up and 16 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats folded.

Infotainment and Connectivity

- Infotainment: 14.3-inch touchscreen (standard)

- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

- Audio System: six-speaker audio system (standard), 10-speaker Bose audio system (optional)

Dual 14.3-inch displays are standard, with one serving as the digital gauge cluster and the other serving as the central infotainment touchscreen. Smartphone-mirroring functions are standard. The optional Technology package includes the upgraded Bose audio system, along with a few other convenience items.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mitsubishi now offers complimentary maintenance, and its standard powertrain warranty is good for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Hybrid components also receive the same 10-year/100,000-mile coverage.

- Limited Warranty: Five years or 60,000 miles

- Powertrain Warranty: 10 years or 100,000 miles

- Battery Warranty: eight years or 100,000 miles

- Complimentary Maintenance: Two years or 30,000 miles
